形式目的語の it とは？think it hard to…
to 不定詞や that 節を目的語にすると、文のまん中が重くなって読みにくくなります。そこで目的語の位置に it を置き、本体をうしろへ回します。形式主語の it と対になる形で、think / find / make のような動詞で使います。

to 不定詞をそのまま目的語にすると、まん中がふくらみます。
×I think to get up early important.
これは英語として通りません。
目的語の位置に it を置き、本体をうしろへ回します。
○ I think it important to get up early.
（早起きは大切だと思います）
it は「それ」という意味を持ちません。
うしろの to get up early を指しているだけです。
よく使う動詞はこの3つです。

同じ考え方が、主語の位置でも起きます。

どちらも「it は場所取り」です。
本体はうしろにあります。
形式主語は中学で習っています。
同じ形が目的語でも起きる、と覚えてください。

うしろが that 節のときも同じです。
I think it strange that he said nothing.
（彼が何も言わなかったのは変だと思います）
make it clear that 〜 はよく使う言い方です。
She made it clear that she would not change her mind.
（考えを変えるつもりはないと、彼女ははっきりさせました）
it を落とせません。
×She made clear that she would not change her mind.
形容詞の代わりに名詞も置ける
it のうしろは形容詞が多いのですが、名詞のこともあります。
I think it a good idea to walk to school.
（学校まで歩くのはよい考えだと思います）
形容詞のときと形は同じで、it → 説明 → 本体の順です。
なお、make it + 形容詞の形では、
「〜を…にする」という意味になります。
The new rule made it easier to borrow books.
（新しい決まりで、本を借りやすくなりました）

よくある間違い
誤I think to get up early important.
正I think it important to get up early.
to 不定詞をそのまま目的語の位置に置けません。
it を先に置いて、本体をうしろへ回します。
誤She made clear that she would not change her mind.
正She made it clear that she would not change her mind.
it を落とせません。
make + it + 形容詞 + that 節で1つの形です。
it が無いと、clear が何を説明しているのか分かりません。
誤I think that important to get up early.
正I think it important to get up early.
場所取りに使うのは it です。that ではありません。
that は「あれ」を指す語なので、うしろの to 〜 を指せません。
誤We found it difficult finishing the work in one day.
正We found it difficult to finish the work in one day.
it が指すのは to + 動詞の原形です。
-ing にすると、it が指す先が無くなります。
