関係代名詞 that の使い方｜who・which との使い分け
that は人にもものにも使える関係代名詞で、who / which のどちらの代わりにもなります。 最上級や the only、all などが付いた名詞のうしろでは、that のほうが自然です。 接続詞の that とは働きが違います。

that は、人にもものにも使えます。
I know a girl who plays the piano.
I know a girl that plays the piano.
This is the bus which goes to the station.
This is the bus that goes to the station.
どちらも同じ意味です。主格でも目的格でも使えます。
迷ったら that を使えばよい、という気楽さがあります。
that のほうが自然な場所がある
次のような語が先行詞に付いていると、
who / which より that が好まれます。

「これしかない」と言い切る言い方と相性がよい、と考えてください。
who / which を使っても間違いではありませんが、
that のほうが英語らしく響きます。
接続詞の that と混同しない
同じ that でも、働きがまったく違います。
うしろの文が完全かどうかで見分けます。
接続詞の that
I think that he is busy.
→ うしろは he is busy。主語も補語もそろった完全な文
関係代名詞の that
This is the book that I bought.
→ うしろは I bought。bought の目的語が欠けている
関係代名詞は、欠けている場所の代わりをしています。
だからうしろの文は必ずどこかが欠けています。
これは that節の単元で予告した見分け方そのものです。
that も目的格なら省略できる
省略のルールは who / which と同じです。
This is the book (that) I bought yesterday. … 目的格なので省ける
I know a girl that plays the piano. … 主格なので省けない
うしろが「主語 + 動詞」なら省ける、すぐ動詞なら省けない。
関係代名詞が何であっても、この判断は変わりません。

これは駅へ行くバスです。

He is the only person that knows the truth.

よくある間違い
誤This is the book that I bought it.
正This is the book that I bought.
that がすでに「それを」の代わりをしています。
it を残すと目的語が2つになります。who / which のときと同じです。
誤I know a girl that she plays the piano.
正I know a girl that plays the piano.
that がすでに「彼女は」の代わりをしています。
she を残すと主語が2つになります。
誤This is the best movie that I have ever seen it.
正This is the best movie that I have ever seen.
同じく it が余分です。
最上級のうしろで that を使う形はよく出ますが、
目的語を消す決まりは変わりません。
誤I know a girl that plays the piano is my sister.
正The girl that plays the piano is my sister.
説明のかたまりを付けた名詞が、そのまま文の主語になる形です。
I know a girl 〜 で始めると、文全体の主語が I になり、
うしろに is が続けられません。
