家でも学校でもない場所｜高校基礎の英語長文（約170語）

Until last spring, I had only two places in my day.

去年の春まで、私の一日には二つの場所しかありませんでした。

I went to school, and then I went home.

学校へ行き、そして家へ帰る。

Both places had rules, and both places knew my name.

どちらの場所にも決まりがあり、どちらも私の名前を知っていました。

Being known everywhere sounds warm, but it can also be heavy.

どこでも知られているのは温かく聞こえますが、重くもなります。

One rainy afternoon, I entered a small library near the station.

雨のある午後、私は駅の近くの小さな図書館に入りました。

Having nothing to do, I sat by the window and opened a magazine.

することがなかったので、窓のそばに座って雑誌を開きました。

Nobody asked me anything, and nobody expected anything.

誰も何もたずねず、誰も何も期待しませんでした。

The rain kept falling, and I stayed for two hours.

雨は降り続け、私は2時間そこにいました。

What I found that day was not a book.

その日に見つけたのは、本ではありませんでした。

It was a place where I could be quiet without being alone.

それは、ひとりぼっちにならずに静かでいられる場所でした。

Some people call this kind of place a third place.

こういう場所を「第三の場所」と呼ぶ人もいます。

A third place does not need to be a library.

第三の場所は図書館でなくてもかまいません。

It can be a park bench, a small shop, or a river path.

公園のベンチでも、小さな店でも、川沿いの道でもよいのです。

What matters is that you can go there without a reason.

大切なのは、理由なしに行けることです。

I had not known how much I needed such a place.

そういう場所がどれほど必要か、私は分かっていませんでした。

Now I go there once or twice a week.

いまは週に1度か2度、そこへ行きます。
