In my first job I was told to arrive five minutes early.

最初の職場で、私は5分前に着くように言われました。

Nobody explained why, and I did not ask.

理由を説明する人はいませんでしたし、私も聞きませんでした。

I considered it a rule about respect.

私はそれを、敬意についての決まりだと考えていました。

I now think it was a rule about other people's planning.

いまは、他人の段取りについての決まりだったと思っています。

Unlike a rule, a custom has no page you can look it up on.

You learn it by getting it wrong.

Arriving early at a dinner party, for example, is not polite at all.

Nevertheless, most people who are careful about time at work are early at parties too.

Having learned the habit once, they carry it into every room.

My own team has tried something much simpler.

Whenever someone comes in late now, nobody looks up.

いま誰かが遅れて入ってきても、誰も顔を上げません。

Shortly after we started, the meetings themselves got shorter.

始めてまもなく、会議そのものが短くなりました。

That was not what we were trying to do.
