so…that と such…that の違いは？名詞で決まる
so 〜 that ... と such 〜 that ... は、どちらも「とても〜なので…」を表します。意味は同じで、違うのはうしろに来るものだけです。so のうしろは形容詞か副詞、 such のうしろは名詞のかたまりが来ます。名詞があるかどうかで選びます。

まず1問やってみる
分かれ目は「名詞があるかどうか」だけ
2つの文をならべると、違いは1か所しかありません。
It was so hot that we stayed inside.
It was such a hot day that we stayed inside.
どちらも「とても暑かったので、中にいた」です。意味は同じです。

名詞があるかどうかを見てください。
hot だけなら so、hot day なら such です。
He was so tired that he fell asleep.形容詞だけ → so

a の位置に気をつける
such のうしろに来るのは「a + 形容詞 + 名詞」です。
a は such のすぐあとに置きます。
○such a hot day
×such hot a day
×a such hot day
数えられる名詞が1つのときだけ a が付きます。
複数形と、数えられない名詞には付きません。

名詞の数えかたが、そのまま a の有無になります。
that 以下は「その結果どうなったか」
that のうしろには、結果を表す文が入ります。
The box was so heavy that I could not lift it.
（その箱はとても重くて、持ち上げられませんでした）
「重い」という原因があって、「持ち上げられない」という結果が続きます。
that は省略できます。話し言葉ではよく省かれます。
It was such a good book I read it twice.○
なお、so that には別の使い方もあります。
He left early so that he could catch the train.
（電車に間に合うように、早く出た）
こちらは目的を表す形で、うしろに can / could / would が入ります。
so と that がくっついているか離れているかで見分けてください。
too 〜 to ... との違い
結果が「できない」のときは、too 〜 to ... で言いかえられます。
He was so tired that he could not walk.
= He was too tired to walk.
（疲れすぎて歩けなかった）
ただし、言いかえられるのは否定の結果のときだけです。
He was so tired that he fell asleep.
（とても疲れていたので、眠ってしまった）
これは「眠った」という起きたことなので、too では言えません。
× He was too tired to fall asleep.（意味が変わります）
so 〜 that ... のほうが広く使えます。
よい結果にも使えます。
It was such a good book that I read it twice.

よくある間違い
誤It was so a hot day that we stayed inside.
正It was such a hot day that we stayed inside.
うしろに day という名詞が来ています。
名詞のかたまりが続くときは such を使います。
so のうしろに来られるのは形容詞と副詞だけです。
誤He was such tired that he fell asleep.
正He was so tired that he fell asleep.
tired は形容詞で、うしろに名詞がありません。
名詞が無いときは so を使います。
誤They were such a kind people that we felt at home.
正They were such kind people that we felt at home.
people は複数なので a は付きません。
a が付くのは、数えられる名詞が1つのときだけです。
誤It was such heavy a rain that the game was stopped.
正It was such heavy rain that the game was stopped.
rain は数えられない名詞なので a は付きません。
また a を置くときの位置は such のすぐあとで、
such a heavy 〜 の順です。
