I have lived in this city for six years.

私はこの町に6年住んでいます。

I still cannot describe how to get from my apartment to the station.

それでも、家から駅までの行き方を説明できません。

I have walked it perhaps four hundred times.

たぶん400回は歩いた道です。

Every one of those times, my phone was in my hand.

その400回とも、手には携帯がありました。

According to people who study this, we remember a route better when we have had to choose it.

これを研究している人たちによれば、道は自分で選んだときのほうがよく覚えているそうです。

The evidence is easier to see the other way around.

その根拠は、逆から見たほうが分かりやすくなります。

A driver who follows a voice for an hour can hardly draw the road afterwards.

A driver who looked at a map for ten minutes usually can.

The difference is attention.

A map asks you where you are, whereas a voice only asks you to turn.
