In August, the sound filling the air is the sound of cicadas.

8月、空気を満たしている音はセミの声です。

It starts early in the morning and does not stop until evening.

朝早くに始まり、夕方まで止みません。

For many people in Japan, it is the sound of summer itself.

日本の多くの人にとって、それは夏そのものの音です。

The song we hear is made only by the males.

私たちが聞くその歌は、オスだけが出しています。

They call to the females sitting in the trees.

オスは、木にとまっているメスに呼びかけているのです。

A cicada spends years under the ground before it comes out.

セミは外に出てくるまで、何年も土の中で過ごします。

The time given to it above the ground is usually only a few weeks.

地上でセミに与えられる時間は、ふつう数週間だけです。

Children who catch them often keep them in a small box.

セミをつかまえた子どもは、よく小さな箱に入れておきます。

But a cicada kept in a box does not sing.

しかし、箱に入れられたセミは鳴きません。

The teacher I had in third grade told us to let them go.

3年生のときの先生は、逃がしてやりなさいと言いました。

She said that the song belongs to the tree, not to us.

その歌は木のものであって、私たちのものではない、と先生は言いました。

In September, the mornings become quiet.

9月になると、朝は静かになります。

The sound we heard every day is gone.
