川に置かれた手袋｜高校基礎の英語長文（約195語）

The river that runs throughout our town was not always clean.

町じゅうを流れているこの川は、いつもきれいだったわけではありません。

Ten years ago the water was in poor condition, especially after the summer rain.

10年前、水はひどい状態でした。とくに夏の雨のあとがそうでした。

People were aware of it.

町の人はそれに気づいていました。

Almost nobody thought it was their own issue.

ただ、自分の問題だと思う人はほとんどいませんでした。

In 2018 the city tried a very small solution.

2018年、市はごく小さな解決策を試しました。

It provided gloves, bags, and other equipment free of charge.

手袋と袋、そのほかの道具を無料で用意したのです。

The equipment was made available at three points along the bank, every Saturday morning.

道具は毎週土曜の朝、川沿いの3か所で使えるようにされました。

Nothing else was required.

ほかには何も必要ありませんでした。

That last sentence mattered more than the gloves did.

大事だったのは手袋より、この最後の一文のほうでした。

Before 2018 you had to sign up a month in advance.

2018年より前は、1か月前に申し込まなければなりませんでした。

The form included six questions, and one of them asked for your reason.

用紙には6つの質問があり、そのうちの1つは理由をたずねるものでした。

In the last year of that system, fourteen people participated.

その仕組みの最後の年に参加したのは、14人でした。

About four hundred people now come each year.

いまは毎年400人ほどが来ます。

The city says its own role is a small one.

市は、自分たちの役割は小さいと言っています。

Its job is to remove the reasons not to come, not to ask people for more effort.

仕事は、来ない理由を取り除くことであって、もっと努力してほしいと頼むことではないのです。

Cleaning the bank each month prevents the trash from reaching the sea.

毎月川岸をきれいにすることで、ごみが海へ流れ出るのを防いでいます。

The river is still not perfect.

川はいまも完璧ではありません。

But the water is clear enough that children look for fish in it again.

それでも、子どもたちがまた魚を探すくらいには澄んでいます。

And the town found something it had not expected.

そして町は、思ってもいなかったものを見つけました。

Saturday morning became an opportunity to meet the people who live on the opposite bank.

土曜の朝が、向こう岸に住む人たちと会う機会になったのです。

It turned out that the environment was the easier half of the problem.

結局のところ、環境のほうが問題としては簡単な半分だったわけです。
