多くの人は、知らない町を歩くとき上を見ます。

But something interesting is under your feet.

しかし、おもしろいものが足もとにあります。

In Japan, many manhole covers have pictures on them.

日本では、多くのマンホールのふたに絵が入っています。

Some show flowers, and some show a famous bridge.

花を見せるものもあれば、有名な橋を見せるものもあります。

The pictures are chosen by each city.

その絵はそれぞれの市が選んでいます。

A town that is famous for apples may show an apple.

りんごで有名な町は、りんごを見せるかもしれません。

A town near the sea may show a fish or a boat.

海の近くの町なら、魚や船かもしれません。

Some covers are painted in bright colors.

明るい色でぬられているふたもあります。

Others are left as plain gray metal.

無地の灰色の金属のままのものもあります。
