最上級とは？-est と most の使い分けと the が付く理由
最上級は3つ以上を比べて「いちばん〜だ」と言う形で、-est を付けるか most を置いて作ります。 どれか1つに決まるので、前に the が付くのが基本です。

作り方は比較級と同じ考え方
比較級で -er だった語は -est、more だった語は most になります。
tall → taller → tallest
easy → easier → easiest
beautiful → more beautiful → most beautiful
つづりの変化も比較級と同じです。
large → largest、big → biggest、easy → easiest。
形が変わる語も同じ顔ぶれです。
good / well → best、bad → worst、many / much → most
なぜ the が付くのか
最上級には the を付けます。理由があります。
「いちばん高い山」と言えば、どれのことか1つに決まります。
相手も特定できるので the が付くのです。
冠詞の単元で扱った「the は相手が特定できるもの」が、
そのままここに効いています。
This is the tallest building in Japan.
ただし副詞の最上級では the を省くことがあります。
He runs (the) fastest in his class.
中学の範囲では付けておけば問題ありません。
範囲は in と of で示す
「どの範囲でいちばんか」を示すとき、in と of を使い分けます。
in … 場所や集団（ひとつのまとまり）
in Japan、in my class、in the world、in my family
of … 複数のもの（数えられる集まり）
of the four、of all the students、of all
He is the tallest in his class.（クラスの中で）
He is the tallest of the five boys.（5人の少年の中で）
うしろが「場所・集団」なら in、
「複数のもの」なら of、と考えると分けられます。
one of the 最上級 + 複数形
「最も〜な…のひとつ」という言い方があります。
This is one of the largest cities in Japan.
（これは日本で最も大きい都市のひとつです）
うしろの名詞は必ず複数形になります。
「いくつかあるうちのひとつ」だからです。
one of the largest city とは言えません。
日本語の「〜のひとつ」に引きずられて単数にしてしまう誤りが多いので、
この形はセットで覚えてください。

よくある間違い
誤This is tallest building in Japan.
正This is the tallest building in Japan.
最上級には the を付けます。
「いちばん高い建物」はどれか1つに決まるので、
相手も特定できます。冠詞の the と同じ考え方です。
誤He is the tallest of his class.
正He is the tallest in his class.
class は集団なので in を使います。
of を使うのは of the five、of all the students のように
複数のものを並べたときです。
誤This is one of the largest city in Japan.
正This is one of the largest cities in Japan.
one of the 〜 のうしろは必ず複数形です。
「いくつかあるうちのひとつ」という意味なので、
もとの集まりは複数でなければなりません。
誤She is the most best singer.
正She is the best singer.
most と最上級を重ねて使うことはできません。
good / well の最上級は best です。most は要りません。
