almostとmostの違い｜「ほとんど」でも品詞が違う
almost は副詞で「もう少しで〜」を表し、うしろに名詞を直接置けません。 most は「大部分の」を表す語で、名詞に直接つきます。 「ほとんどの生徒」は almost students ではなく most students です。

almost のうしろに名詞は置けない
日本語の「ほとんど」につられて、こう書きがちです。
× Almost students like music.
○ Most students like music.（ほとんどの生徒は音楽が好きだ）
almost は副詞です。副詞は名詞を説明できません。
almost が説明するのは、動詞・形容詞・副詞・数量です。
I almost forgot.（もう少しで忘れるところだった）
It's almost eight.（もうすぐ8時だ）
The bottle is almost empty.（びんはほとんど空だ）
どれも名詞の前には立っていません。
most は名詞に直接つく
most は「大部分の」という意味で、名詞に直接つきます。
Most students like music.（ほとんどの生徒は〜）
Most people know this song.（ほとんどの人は〜）
the は付けません。
× the most students（「最も多くの生徒」という別の意味になります）
特定の集団を指すときは most of the 〜 の形にします。
Most of the students in my class like music.
（私のクラスの生徒のほとんどは〜）

almost all なら名詞の前に置ける
almost を「ほとんどの〜」の意味で使いたいときは、
almost all の形にします。
○ Almost all students like music.
○ Almost all of the students in my class like music.
almost が説明しているのは all（すべて）という数量の語です。
「すべて、とまでは言わないが、それに近い」という意味になります。
almost は名詞を直接説明できませんが、
数量を表す語なら説明できます。
almost all（ほとんどすべて）
almost every day（ほとんど毎日）
almost always（ほとんどいつも）
almost ten years（10年近く）
最上級の most と混同しない
most にはもう1つの顔があります。最上級を作る most です。
This is the most interesting book.（最もおもしろい本）
She runs the most slowly.（最もゆっくり走る）
こちらには the が付きます。
「大部分の」の most には the が付きません。
the があるかどうかで見分けられます。
most students … ほとんどの生徒
the most difficult question … 最も難しい問題
同じ形の語ですが、働きが違います。
比較の単元で学んだ most は、こちらのほうです。

よくある間違い
誤Almost students like music.
正Most students like music.
almost は副詞なので、名詞の前に置けません。
「ほとんどの生徒」と言いたいなら most students です。
almost を使うなら almost all students になります。
誤Most of students in my class walk to school.
正Most of the students in my class walk to school.
most of のうしろには the が要ります。
of を使うのは特定の集団を指すときなので、
the や my などが付いた名詞が続きます。
誤The most students like music.
正Most students like music.
「大部分の」の most に the は付けません。
the most students だと「最も多くの生徒」という
最上級の意味になってしまいます。
誤He practices the piano most every day.
正He practices the piano almost every day.
「ほとんど毎日」は almost every day です。
most は名詞につく語で、every day のような数量の語は説明できません。
