There is と There are の使い分け｜the が使えない理由
There is / There are は「〜がある」「〜がいる」と、相手がまだ知らないものの存在を 伝える言い方です。うしろに来る名詞が単数か複数かで is と are を使い分けます。

- うしろの名詞に合わせて is / are を選ぶ
- 相手がまだ知らないものを新しく持ち出すときに使う
- the や my が付く特定のものには使わない
- 文頭の There には「そこに」という意味はない
まず1問やってみる
is と are はうしろの名詞で決まる
ふつうの文では、be動詞の形は主語で決まりました。
There is / There are では、うしろに来る名詞で決まります。
There is a book on the desk.（本が1冊）
There are three books on the desk.（本が3冊）
文の先頭の There に「そこに」という意味はありません。
形式的に置かれているだけで、内容の中心はうしろの名詞です。
数えられない名詞のときは is を使います。
There is some water in the glass.
相手が知らないものに使う
There is / There are は、相手がまだ知らないものを新しく持ち出す言い方です。
だから the や my が付いた「特定のもの」には使えません。
There is the book on the desk. とは言いません。
the book はもう相手が知っているものだからです。
この場合は The book is on the desk. と、ふつうの文にします。
a、two、some、many、no のように「どれか決まっていない」ことを示す語が
付いているときに There is / There are を使う、と考えると整理できます。
否定文と疑問文
be動詞の文なので、作り方は同じです。新しい語は要りません。
否定文は is / are のうしろに not を置きます。
There is not a park near here.
「1つもない」と言うときは There is no park near here. のほうが自然です。
疑問文は is / are を There の前に出します。
Is there a park near here?
答えるときは Yes, there is. / No, there isn't. と there を使って返します。
過去のことを言うとき
過去のことを言うときは was / were にします。
There was a big tree here ten years ago.
There were many people at the station.
ここでも、うしろの名詞が単数なら was、複数なら were です。

よくある間違い
誤There are a book on the desk.
正There is a book on the desk.
うしろの名詞が a book で単数なので is を使います。
There is / There are では、be動詞の形はうしろの名詞で決まります。
文の先頭にある There に合わせるのではありません。
誤There is many books on the desk.
正There are many books on the desk.
many books は複数なので are を使います。
うしろの名詞を見てから is / are を選ぶ、という順で考えると間違えません。
誤There is the book on the desk.
正The book is on the desk.
the book は相手がもう知っている特定のものなので、
There is で新しく持ち出す言い方には合いません。
特定のものの場所を言うときは、ふつうの文にします。
誤There is a park near here? Yes, it is.
正Is there a park near here? Yes, there is.
疑問文にするには is を There の前に出します。
答えるときも it ではなく there を使って
Yes, there is. / No, there isn't. と返します。
